Hello 2018!

Hey readers,

I did it. I started a blog. Welcome to the first attempt of me pulling words out of my brain in what will hopefully resemble the English language.

Late last year a friend introduced me to this gorgeous corner of the internet-world of ‘Bookstagram’ (guys it’s just Instagram, but accounts dedicated to books). Discovering this  sweet pocket of social media made me realise that I definitely hadn’t been reading as much as I used to or wanted to be (especially after I stumbled on a notebook from 2008 listing books I’d read – there were over 60…last year I think I read 30…). It also made me sit up and take note of how many new books were knocking around the book-lovers world and how had I missed them all?!

So, I decided this year that I was going to set a goal to read more books by Women and POC authors. It’s not because I think I’ve actively avoided those in the past, nor have I not read any of these previously, but I want to be actively making the choice to read more diversely. This blog, hopefully, will keep me accountable to that.

I’m not saying books written by white men aren’t good, there are plenty of books falling in this category that have brought me great joy and comfort, and still do. There are plenty of these authors who  have taught me things or made me explore ideas that were foreign to me. BUT, I feel like they have long been the dominant voice and 2018 is my year to listen to new voices.

January was good, I read 6 (and a bit) books and started clawing my way back to defining myself as a reader. The focus for the rest of the year is diversity.

I am hopeful a few of you will have some good recommendations to throw in the comments below! ♥

  1. I definitely understand that horrifying realization of how long has it been since I’ve read a book???? I’m in the same boat as you and did basically the same thing! New book bloggers unite 🤛🏾✨
