Review: What If It’s Us? – Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera

After reading Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda earlier in the year, I fell in love with Albertalli’s storytelling and style. So naturally, I jumped at the chance to grab a review copy of this gorgeous book from Simon & Schuster‘s publicity team (thank you!). They’re also the team behind The Book Ninja, which I also loved.

Ok so let’s jump in. What if It’s Us? opens on 17-year old kid, Arthur, who’s in New York for the summer interning at his mum’s law firm. Sidetracked from a coffee run at the sight of a mustachio’d set of twins, he bumps in to Ben and they get talking…but Arthur doesn’t get his number. And so begins this sweet, romantic love story about two boys finding their feet (and each other) in New York City. There’s flash mobs and f**k-ups, ex-boyfriends and ex-best-friends, and a whole lot of cute fumbling through teenagehood to be enjoyed in this delightful read.

Arthur and Ben are both such unique characters. Neither of them really fit a stereotype generally seen in YA lit. Sure, there are specific traits that we see a lot, but the boys are both quirky in their own ways, and it was a joy reading both of their perspectives and hearing the difference in their voices.

I loved that this book looked at a different kind of teenage love (spoiler alert: I LOVE LOVE!), both romantic and friendly love. Arthur and Ben have their own best friend groups which are completely different to each other and help Albertalli and Silvera explore the different kinds of friendships that can blossom in our teenage years (and beyond).

Look, I’ll be honest, I don’t think I can do this book justice in a review. There are so many things about it I loved – the characterisations, the conflicts, the ups and downs, the setting, the prose – everything adds up to make it a pretty spectacular YA read. In typical YA fashion, its simple language which makes it a fast and easy read, but the simple prose seems to add up to more than it’s parts as it honestly is just a gorgeous read. I kind of want to be best friends with everyone in it? Is that a thing?

Just read it.

Rating: An incredibly gorgeous story of love, fate, and friendship. With diverse characters and entertaining storytelling, if you like contemporary YA you’ll love this.

What diverse reads have you picked up this year? Are you excited for the release of this one?

What If It’s Us is out on October 9th, and I can’t wait for the world to get its hands on this one!

Until next time,

My heartfelt thanks to the team at Simon & Schuster for sending me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. I had no doubts I’d love it 😉
