Top 3 Thursday: Favourite Words

We all know we have them – those words that make your heart flutter, your soul soar, ones that invoke emotion every time they’re used.

Or maybe you’re not a huge nerd like me?

Anyway here we go…

1. Irrevocably

in a way that cannot be changed, reversed, or recovered.

What a heavy word, and you just know when a writer uses it they are damn SERIOUS about it. For me, ‘irrevocably’ always seems like the turning point in a book.

2. Twinkled

shine with a gleam that changes constantly from bright to faint.

So that’s the official meaning of the word, but in books there’s always gorgeous twinkling lights at sunset, or the twinkling of an eye that feels a little bit mischievous or like someone’s heart is swelling at the sight of it.

3. Petrichor

a pleasant smell that frequently accompanies the first rain after a long period of warm, dry weather.

Not found often in books, admittedly, but I feel like this is a smell that is very deserving of its own word. Living in Australia, this smell always feels like the earth is coming back to life after a much-needed drink.

I’ve tried to stick to English words here as they’re the ones that I’ve read my whole life, but I know there are so many beautiful words with such perfect meaning we aren’t able to accurately articulate in the English language…e.g. Tsundoku [Japanese] – The act of leaving a book unread after buying it, typically piling it up together with other such unread books (it’s like this word was made for me…anyone else?)

What are some of your favourite words? I always love hearing the answers to this, and learning new words!

Until next week,

M xx

  1. I love petrichor as well, although I don’t think I’ve ever said it out loud and would be scared of pronouncing it wrong haha.
My favourite Japanese word is “Shokki araiki”!
